A visual history of browser design

03.11.14

Chrome, in user interface jargon is the part of the browser that is not the webpage: title bar, address bar, buttons etc. Ironically Google Chrome was the browser which radically sped up the process of diminishing the usage of chrome in browsers.

Here's a visual history of browser chrome over the years. For screen space and loading time considerations only the header is shown except if there are significant chrome elements elsewhere in the page. The statusbar is most of the times the only chrome element missing from these screenshots and it gradually started to disappear around 2008.
